Sealed crawl spaces can be expensive – both in material and labor – and you have to condition the closed crawl spaces and possibly dehumidify them for the rest of the home’s life. That’s expensive as well. One alternative might be the “Old School” approach of elevating the home and venting the crawl space – but providing superior insulation at the flooring system. No insulation on the walls of the crawl space, no 20mil vapor barrier membrane, no conditioning or dehumidifying of those dark spaces under a home. Much lower risk of rot or other bad stuff. And unlike a traditional crawl space, not having to manage whether the crawl space vents are open or closed at different times of the year (I mean, WHO DOES THAT anyway?).
At Eco-Panels we have seen a recent uptick in clients considering our floor panels instead of all of the labor and materials that goes into a sealed crawl. Few clients need to use our floor panels – they are setting their home on top of a traditional crawl space or on a slab most of the time – but we are seeing people who had been considering the closed crawl option look at our insulated floor panels more and more. If you do not need the space under the house for conditioning equipment, then it can make other choices a whole lot easier.
At Eco-Panels we can make the construction of a high-performance home both faster and easier for a builder or a DIY owner-builder with our innovative interlocking and pre-engineered structural insulated building panels – including our floor planels if you want to skip the time and expense of worrying about an insulated crawl space. And please note that Eco-Panels are styrene-free for your family’s health and safety.
