Another ADU for North Carolina! This Accessory Dwelling Unit – quite a large one at over 900 sqft – is going up wonderfully not far from our factory in the Winston-Salem-Greensboro-High Point region. The wall panels went up in less than a day. On day 2, they set roof trusses on the rear of the unit (the front is vaulted) and framed the interior. Day 3 they set gable end trusses, followed by the roof panels for the front vaulted section first and then the rear section last. So in 5 mostly half-days they have a small home – much stronger and more efficiently insulated than stud frame could ever dream of, ready for window installation, plumbers and electricians.

The wall panels are 4.5″ thick with an R26 rating and pre-finished siding that will be finished in a board & batten architectural style, and the rear of the structure will have 6.5″ R40 roof panels and the front section – vaulted at about 14′ length – have a thicker 8.25″ R53 roof panel for the longer horizontal span. The center heavy truss is reduced height a bit to allow for a uniform top roof surface (the owner saved a couple of thousand dollars by having the R40 panels over inexpensive trusses in the rear of the home). This is also why you can make out a small jog in the wall height – and you can see in the factory pre-check photos the small beam pockets to receive the rear trusses to allow for a better thermal envelope with uninterrupted insulation at the roof-wall juncture.

We guarantee that clients will not have mold grow in their wall cavities – like is common with stud frame construction – because our truly closed cell foam that is injected in the panel cavity does not allow it to grow – unlike the EPS “sips” used by most of the panel industry because EPS is an open-cell foam core. This client will tape/caulk the interior roof panel seams, a best-practice technique to keep interior moisture from rising through the building envelope.
